Kilby Labs Optics Design Intern — All-Silicon Electro-Optic Modulator

The RF Design Intern role is within Kilby Labs, the central R&D organization of Texas Instruments (TI). The lab is chartered to develop novel and innovative technologies and strategies for new business opportunities, drive the next generation, differentiated technologies for existing businesses and recruit top technical talent for TI.
Responsibilities may include:
- Design of high-performance Silicon Electro-Optic modulator on CMOS compatible Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform
- Electro-optic simulations and analysis of all-Silicon Mach-Zehnder modulators to achieve high-speed, low voltage, and low-loss performance
- Simulations include optical FDTD/ mode/EME, TCAD device, and electro-optic co-simulation using tools like Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL, Sentaurus and Cadence
- Layout and/or guidance of layout of key circuit blocks
Minimum Requirements:
- Currently pursuing Masters or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with optics/photonics, and RF background
- Cumulative 3.0/4.0 GPA or higher
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with photonic integrated devices and circuit design
- Understanding of integrated photonic building block components like waveguides, directional couplers, grating/ edge couplers, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers
- Understanding of fabrication and testing of integrated photonic components
- Familiarity with photonic layout tools
- Familiarity with Ansys-Lumerical mode/ device/ FDTD simulation
- Familiarity with transistor-level CMOS and Bipolar circuit design, as well as layout techniques for high-speed circuits
- Familiarity with Cadence design tools, including Virtuoso Schematic Editor, ADE, Spectre
